Columbus Avenue Neighborhood Transportation Plan

San Francisco, California

San Francisco County Transportation Authority

Sub-consultants to Nelson\Nygaard

2004-2009

Community Design + Architecture supported transportation consultants Nelson\Nygaard in developing conceptual designs for streetscape improvements along Columbus Avenue, the heart of San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. A major goal of the streetscape improvements is to better accommodate outdoor seating for the many cafés and restaurants that line Columbus Avenue, a street heavily frequented by local residents and tourists alike, and to reduce the crowding and conflicts that frequently occur between diners and pedestrian sidewalk traffic. CD+A illustrated three alternative design concepts for streetscape improvements which included different approaches to traffic circulation, street trees, street furnishings (benches, bike racks, newspaper racks, etc.), bus stops, expanded sidewalks, crosswalks, and the concept of “flex-lanes” which can be used for on-street parking but also accommodate café seating set up with movable bollards, tables, and planters.

CD+A produced three large presentation boards that were successfully used at a major community and stakeholder meeting. The boards illustrated the key features of each design alternative through plans and street sections, along with perspective drawings, photo examples, and descriptions of all major design concepts as well as benefits and tradeoffs associated with each alternative.
