Alkimos/Eglinton Community Plan
Wanneroo, Western Australia
Woodsome Management Pty and Landcorp
Associate-in-Charge (Calthorpe Associates)
1996-1997

Master Plan and Existing Conditions (2.2 Mb)
Southern Tract Development Concepts (2.4 Mb)

As part of the on-going planning for this major expansion to the City of Wanneroo, Mr. Erickson led a week long Community Design Workshop with Doug Kelbaugh. The workshop teams designed options for the community plan exploring the potential for a sustainable transit- and pedestrian-oriented series of villages and neighborhoods within the 2,660 hectare (6,800 acre) site.

Alkimos/Eglinton is located on the northern edge of the Perth Metropolitan Area and has been identified as an area for urban growth in the Regional Plan. Along with an adjacent property, Alkimos/Eglinton will define the northern limit of the Perth region for the foreseeable future. During the Community Design Workshop, teams of U.S. and Australian designers and planners developed two design alternatives for the site. Key variables and issues were explored, including:

  • protection of existing unique habitats within the property (coastal dunes, heath, and woodlands) through larger preservation areas and integration with residential and recreational development;
  • alternative alignments for a regional commuter rail line;
  • alternatives for reducing the scale of regional roads so they integrate the community rather than divide it; and
  • varying scales and locations of retail and employment land uses to encourage transit, bicycling, and walking as alternatives to the automobile.

As Associate-in-Charge for Calthorpe Associates, Mr. Erickson worked with the clients and local consultants in a follow-up one week working session to create a synthesis Draft Master Plan. The Master Plan reflected the best elements of the two community design alternatives, as well as more detailed environmental review of the site and economic/market analysis of the alternatives. The Master Plan set direction for the preparation of the formal submittal to the City.
