Downtown Boise
Mobility Study
Boise, Idaho
Community Design + Architecture teamed with ARUP on the Downtown Boise Mobility Study, a long-range transportation study that included an emphasis on coordinating future land use change with public infrastructure investments. Community Design + Architecture worked closely with the ARUP team to develop a land use growth scenario used as an input into the 25-year transportation forecast. The growth scenario was based on an evaluation of existing land use plans and market projections. Using an interactive, GIS-based methodology, the team allocated anticipated residential, retail, and office growth to targeted opportunity sites using a set of building prototypes that were based on existing and planned development in the city. Community Design + Architecture then worked with ARUP to create an implementation strategy for the growth scenario, including changes to land use and development policies, recommendations for future planning studies, and public improvements necessary to support development.
Community Design + Architecture was also responsible for illustrating street design recommendations and a multi-modal center design, which are integral to improving mobility in the downtown. Community Design + Architecture worked with ARUP to determine street design requirements and innovative approaches to the design of a high-volume arterial through the Central Business District. Street design concepts include the potential to narrow lanes, increase landscaping, collect stormwater runoff, improve pedestrian connections, and create small public spaces. The multi-modal center design incorporates inter-city bus with local bus transit, structured parking, a plaza, and transit support facilities. The design addresses site constraints, transit access requirements, and pedestrian- oriented design principles.
