Community Design + Architecture, as a subconsultant to Iteris, Inc., developed urban design strategies to support the City of Los Angeles’ Mobility Strategy Plan for the heart of Hollywood’s nightclub district, centered on the famous intersection of Sunset and Vine. With the Hollywood Boulevard corridor now anchored by two Red Line Metro stations, new residential and mixed-use development in this traditional employment, tourist, and nightlife center has created a major opportunity to catalyze redevelopment and revitalization by increasing the pedestrian and transit orientation of the area’s major boulevards and the streets that intersect them.
The Mobility Strategy study examined issues related to vehicle circulation, parking, circulator transit options, and taxi and limousine circulation. Hollywood’s unique set of issues include large pedestrian volumes; high volumes of taxis, limousines, and tour buses; long and unattractive walking distances to relatively few parking structures; and special events that can disrupt normal traffic flow.
Following a detailed site inventory, CD+A prepared street plans and sections illustrating locations for new street trees, crosswalks, curb bulb-outs, planted areas, seating, and other potential pedestrian improvements that could be achieved while implementing the City’s proposed street standards. Additionally, CD+A prepared a design concept for a centralized valet parking station in keeping with the area’s focus on nightlife and excitement.
